Wood Cockroaches
If you’ve spotted a brownish cockroach flying around your porch lights on a warm summer evening in Mt. Juliet, chances are you’ve encountered a wood cockroach Tennessee’s most misunderstood roach species. Unlike their notorious indoor cousins, wood cockroaches are outdoor dwellers that rarely pose the health risks or infestation concerns associated with German or American cockroaches
What Are Wood Cockroaches?
Wood cockroaches, primarily the Pennsylvania wood cockroach (Parcoblatta pensylvanica), are native outdoor cockroaches common throughout Tennessee. These beneficial decomposers play an important ecological role in breaking down dead plant material in our forests and wooded areas.
Unlike pest cockroaches that thrive indoors, wood roaches are accidental invaders that cannot survive or breed in your home’s environment. They’re nature’s recyclers, not household pests though they can certainly startle homeowners when they wander inside.
Wood Cockroaches vs. Indoor Pest Cockroaches: Know the Difference
| Feature | Wood Cockroach | German/American Cockroach |
|---|---|---|
| Habitat | Outdoors in wood piles, trees | Indoors in kitchens, bathrooms |
| Breeding | Cannot breed indoors | Rapidly multiply indoors |
| Survival indoors | Dies within days | Thrives year-round |
| Disease risk | None | Spreads bacteria, triggers allergies |
| Food source | Decaying plant matter | Human food, garbage, grease |
| Behavior | Wanders aimlessly indoors | Hides in cracks, under appliances |
Life Cycle and Seasonal Activity
Wood cockroaches follow a predictable seasonal pattern in Middle Tennessee:
Spring (March-May): Nymphs become active as temperatures warm Early Summer (May-June): Peak mating season – males fly in large numbers seeking females Summer (June-August): Females lay egg capsules (oothecae) containing 30-32 eggs each Fall (September-November): Adults remain active until first frost Winter: Overwinter as nymphs and eggs in protected outdoor locations
Development from egg to adult takes 280-760 days—much longer than indoor pest species that can mature in just 2-3 months.
